scholarship for leadership in sport

New Zealand is the home for a lot of firsts for females – namely, giving women the power to vote way back in 1893.              We’re a bit behind the times when it comes to sport, though.

We're bursting with female sports talent from Cape Reinga to Bluff – yet this is not reflected in sporting management and governance. The aim of this scholarship is to help young female athletes gain influential roles in New Zealand sporting unions and communities by helping them get to university.

Tertiary education is essential to further develop the scholar’s intellectual and personal skills that are required if they were to take on these roles. In a prominent position in the sporting environment, women can help grow their sport and increase female representation in sport at high levels.

Growth in funding and support of New Zealand’s women’s sport depends entirely on the people dedicated to supporting the game. To incentivise commitment to women’s sport, the scholarship will be awarded to a young female heavily involved in leadership activities in sport.

Scholarships are a long term goal for Forward Foundation. Our target is to acquire funding by 2016.

Key Benefits

  •  A higher profile for women’s sport will raise the performance of New Zealand sport in general
  • Establishing a scholarship of this nature will raise the interest level for a number of girls who otherwise may not have considered an active involvement in sport
  •  An established trust will open other opportunities for supporting girls’ sport through funding and resources such as for sports gear and training equipment
